Domestic sockets in a commercial canteen kitchen.

A previous contractor had replaced the plugs on a commercial heater unit but had fitted domestic-grade sockets to the supply, which are not suitable for sustained commercial draw. Replaced with heavy-duty commercial sockets, swapped the plug, verified heaters and thermostat. While on site, identified a separate blast chiller condensate pump fault.

The visit

Attended site, signed in via security, located the unit in the staff canteen. Previous reports flagged the unit as cycling unexpectedly and intermittently failing.

What we found

Upon inspection, the plugs on the heater unit had previously been changed by another contractor. However, domestic-grade sockets had been fitted to the wall, which are not suitable for sustained commercial-draw appliances. The current rating and contact area of domestic sockets is below what the heater unit requires; this was the root cause of the cycling and the slow degradation of the connections.

The fix

Removed the domestic sockets from the wall. Replaced with heavy-duty commercial sockets rated for the heater unit's continuous draw. Cut the plug from the unit and fitted a new heavy-duty commercial plug.

Tested operation. Confirmed all four heaters working correctly and switching on and off as required. Tested the thermostat regulation across the operating range. Recorded heater amp readings under load. All within spec.

Recommendation to staff

Advised the kitchen staff to monitor the temperature behaviour, since the thermostat must regulate correctly and prevent the unit from running continuously while empty. Continuous-running while empty was a contributing factor to the previous wear on the unit.

While on site, a secondary find

Asked by the head chef to inspect the blast chiller, which had been reported as leaking. Investigation showed the condensate pump on the blast chiller had failed. Replacement required.

Chef informed. Return visit scheduled to fit a replacement condensate pump.

Outcome

Cost band

Commercial socket and plug replacement with heater testing typically £180-£320 + VAT depending on time and certificate scope. Blast chiller condensate pump replacement typically £220-£380 + VAT plus parts.
